Our principles...

The principles on which we operate and provide services are as follows:

Independence

Advocates are volunteers who share the principles of citizen advocacy and those of Choices Advocacy. They are independent of anyone who provides a service to adults with a learning disability. This assures loyalty to the partner and avoids any potential conflict of interest.

Choices Advocacy is independent of any service provider for the same reasons as above.

Empowerment

Advocacy is about keeping control in the hands of the partner. Advocates are there to support their partner, not to introduce their own solutions or advice.

Confidentiality

Advocates are involved in confidential matters. They are committed to a policy of confidentiality, so would never reveal details about their partner without that partner giving prior permission.

Loyalty

Advocates are loyal only to their partner, they do not represent the interests of anyone else. This includes professional workers and the clients family.

Equal Rights

Empowerment means that advocates follow the wishes of their partner, even if they disagree with the course of action. Supporting someone's decision recognises the right to make those decisions.

Payments

Advocates are volunteers and as such are not paid. This means that there is never any financial advantage to be gained by an advocate who represents a partner. Out of pocket expenses are paid, such as travel and telephone. The aim is that no one will be finacially disadvantaged through being an advocate.

Safety and Risk

Choices Advocacy is always aware of the safety of all those involved with the project. All partnerships are subject to an assessment of any safety issues in advance. Choices Advocacy strives for quality recruitment. Because we are aware of the vunerability of our clients, we actively follow up references and undertake police computer checks. These are only undertaken when official application is made.
